After 31 years of marriage, Nicole and Chris went on a marriage retreat! This was not just any retreat, but a retreat for parents raising children with special needs called “Together in the Journey”. The retreat was over two nights (Friday through Sunday at Winshape on Berry College’s gorgeous 27,000-acre campus in Rome, Georgia.
Why did we decide to attend a marriage retreat? We wanted to continue to grow and improve our marriage. And we wanted to share our experience with you!
At the retreat, we met many amazing parents, were pampered all weekend, learned a few communication skills, and had plenty of time on the agenda for rest and recharge.
THREE THINGS WE LEARNED AT THE RETREAT
- We (women and men) work from different dictionaries and expectations.
- We are so busy living at the “speed of life”.
- Leftovers are fine for food, but not for relationships.
Did you know that the number one reason for divorce is drift? The bigger question – do you know how to avoid the drift?
All of the sessions were about building a stronger relationship and prioritizing your marriage. The presenters were funny, relevant, and approachable. It was nice to have time on Saturday night to play board games and hang out around fire pits with other parents. The couple who presented the sessions were also available during the retreat. We personally had breakfast with the presenters one morning and chatted about the podcast on Saturday night.
Our favorite things about the retreat were the location, rest, and service. All of the staff were amazing to make sure we had everything we need during our stay.
The location was amazing! It was peaceful and quiet. The retreat made sure to provide plenty of time for rest and connection. On Saturday, we had over four hours in the middle of the day to rest, take a walk, ride a bike, or play a board game. It was great to have uninterrupted time when we didn’t have to worry about our daughter, meals, or anything during the three days.
