This summer couldn’t get here sooner! From wearing masks to class and for many students another year of virtual learning at home. When you think about planning for the summer, you may be thinking about sand between your toes with a frosty drink in hand. Oh, sorry that was my daydream! For kiddos with dyslexia, they have to continue to work over the summer. It’s a great time to catch up or just not slip behind (they tend to forget the rules they don’t practice over the summer).

There are 3 things I recommend this summer

  1. Plan time for family fun and relaxation. We all need to recharge this summer!
  2. Plan for more remediation for your child with dyslexia. The experts recommend 10 sessions over the summer. Another option is a dyslexia summer camp where your kiddo has some camp activities with remediation built-in to their days. Are you wondering how to find dyslexia camps? You can visit our 2021 dyslexia summer camp and programs list at www.dyslexiamomlife.com/summer2021.
  3. Nurture your child’s strengths and passions by finding summer camps in his or her strength! Does she love soccer? Sign her up for a one-week soccer camp, so that she has time to do something she loves while still continuing her summer tutoring.

Bonus: You can also take a look at next year’s school curriculum and start introducing some of the topics over the summer. Is there a museum that has a special exhibit or a trip you could take to learn about the local culture or history? Any exposure your child has early, especially when it’s visual, will help him next school year.

Our children (with dyslexia) can’t take the summer off, but we can make sure that it is a summer with plenty of time to relax, recharge, and have fun too!
