Did you know that you have a lot in common with an amazing CEO, author, and billionaire?
I recently read Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima. Y’all, I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in a week and I have been sharing it with everyone. I know you may be traveling for spring break, Easter weekend, or making plans for your summer travels. This is a book I recommend you take along with you to read or listen to while on your trip. If you are looking for a good book to read now while you are in carline or in the margins of your day – this is it!
I was first introduced to Jamie Kern Lima when I was taking a course from Amy Porterfield to build a digital course. Jamie spoke to our group last year. I wish I had met her in person, but since this was the beginning of the 2020 pandemic the event was virtual. Jamie lights up a room with her smile and warmth. I started following Jamie and when she released her book on our daughter’s birthday it was another sign that I need to read this book.
I originally picked up a copy to learn more about how Jamie created her company IT cosmetics from her living room to selling it to L’Oreal for 1.2 billion dollars. But her story resonated with me as a mom raising a child with dyslexia in so many ways.
So, what do you have in common with Jamie? You’re not a CEO, author, or billionaire, but you do have 3 things in common with Jamie.
- Believe Where You Come from Doesn’t Determine Where You’re Going (Chapter 2)
“When something hard happens, once you’re able to process it emotionally, you’re then left with choices. Do you victim-up or do you warrior-up? Do you give up or do you level up and believe? The up is up to you.”
It may seem easier to let the school take all the responsibility for educating our children and providing reading remediation. How are you choosing to show up? I choose to be a warrior mom! Your children are watching how you show up and how you respond when something hard happens. What do you want them to see?
- Believe in the Power of Embracing Your Truth (Chapter 3)
“Pay attention to your struggles, as they can become your superpower.”
The struggle is real. Raising children in our society is not an easy task these days. Throw in raising a child with dyslexia and all that comes with it . . . well, it’s just too much some days. Jamie encourages us to embrace our struggles and find our superpowers. I bet you’ve learned more patience and empathy for others already (not yet, well give it time). You will learn to be your child’s best advocate. Lean into that superpower. You got this!
- Don’t Believe in Balance, It’s a Lie (Chapter 13)
“But I don’t think achieving balance is possible. I believe balance, as it pertains to juggling all the important aspects of our lives equally, is a lie.”
Jamie is a mother to two children, so she understands the idea of balance. But, she doesn’t subscribe to that thought. Jamie believes in being fully present where she is – with her kiddos at a meeting, etc. What she tries not to do is be with her family while constantly thinking about work and vice versa. That’s a hard one. For many of us, that’s a work in progress. And that is ok.
